The traditional rural settlement is an important witness of agricultural civilization in China, which is impressed by the regional characteristics, patriarchal ideology and level of economic development, showing rich and diverse patterns, and has a high historic cultural value and research significance. Over the past 30 years of rapid urbanization in China, a variety of needs and requirements from different subjects caused the living space of traditional rural settlements be constantly squeezed, showing two types of construction chaos: “format” obliterated the diversity and local characteristics, while excessive freedom for villagers to rebuild spontaneously caused increasingly disordered. How to balance the preservation and development, keep the diversity in construction and development, is the common scientific problem and difficulties for Chinese traditional rural settlements.
Based on the practical problems and value orientation, this thesis tries to introduce the performance-based design method into the conservation planning, combine the concept “reasonable flexibility” with the tradition and integrity of traditional rural settlements, find interactive planning skills.
First, the thesis reviews the progress of rural construction in China and development of village planning as well as the experience from other countries, extracts the theme of current development: continuous modernization, preservation and development, traditional features, performance improvement. Then, discusses and analyzes the tradition and integrity of the traditional rural settlement, use “locum, time, society, heritage” to represent the tradition, use “elements, structure, function, relation” to describe the integrity, and take environment, chronology, humanity, shape, units and marks as six targets.
Related to current situation of development and villagers’ investigation, the thesis puts forward four specific goals of protection and development: conserve the spatial structure, ensure the safe pattern, improve the function, enhance facility efficiency; then establishes the technical framework and path of performance-based planning, transforming the concept of “performance-based” and “reasonable flexibility” into detailed skills along the whole planning process. Through three times of import, expand the positioning, objectives, content, project collection, parameters and other indicators of traditional planning from “macro scale value judgment-middle scale item collection-micro scale design” to realize the performance improvement in different levels and directions. The thesis mainly elaborates the mechanism and significance between the active adjustment and passive response interaction on the level of operation through the streets network adaptability and accessibility improvement, 2D and 3D index of plot pattern feedback. Finally, Cao Dun village in Mount Wuyi is taken as example, the planning carries out the performance-based improvement, also interprets and reflects on the relationship among the industrial, environment and the traditional creature.
The innovation points are: ensure the physical elements of traditional rural settlements by illustrating “tradition” and “integrity”, combine the performance-based design and traditional preservation. Through multi-scale import and combination, as well as the skill of “multi-project targets collection” and “bi-structure and bi-react”, this thesis tries to expand the method and contents of traditional planning, to realize the parallel development of performance improvement and morphological preservation.
