The significance and value of entrepreneurship education have been widely acknowledged by almost all countries. Whether at home or abroad, university entrepreneurship education is being actively implemented. Many universities adopt the model and practices of entrepreneurship education directly from some developed capitalist countries such as America because they have started entrepreneurship education early and gained much experience. Many universities believe in the direct transplantation of the model, which, however, has violated the basic principles of entrepreneurship education. Entrepreneurship is not a theory or a discipline or even a major. It is a practice. Entrepreneurship activity is an organic practical process consisting of the motivation, knowledge, various resources and specific activities of the enterpriser. It leads to the creation of the new value. Therefore, entrepreneurship education targets at the cultivation of the enterpriser’s motivation, knowledge and abilities, the integration of various resources and the guidance of the specific activities. Innovation is in nature the change that happens with the change of people, time and situation. There is no reason to adopt other models directly.
The long-standing and rich traditional Chinese culture has already been deeply rooted in people’s mind restricting people’s behavior, which is indispensable to entrepreneurship education targeting at college students. Since people live in culture, studies on education have to initiate and implement cultural paradigms. Studies on entrepreneurship education are no exception. There are different cultural backgrounds for entrepreneurship education at home and abroad. Thus, the same models would bear different results when adopted in a different environment.
This dissertation examines systematically problems in Chinese university entrepreneurship education from the cultural perspective, explores the nature of ideological education and entrepreneurship education, reviews the historical evolution of Chinese university entrepreneurship education, points out the problems and defects of current university entrepreneurship education and identifies and analyzes deeply the cultural factors affecting entrepreneurship education in traditional Chinese culture. In the end, on basis of all the studies, this dissertation proposes the general scheme, guiding ideology, fundamental principles, major objectives and specific content of the construction of entrepreneurship education system of Chinese universities from the cultural perspective and accomplishes the systematic studies from cultural review to the construction of the system.
This dissertation argues that entrepreneurship education should follow the national conditions and culture and demonstrate different characteristics and principles in different cultural backgrounds. There are many favorable factors in traditional Chinese culture promoting practice and entrepreneurship. But there are also many unfavorable factors for business development or starting enterprises. Hence, under the given cultural background, our nation should establish our own university entrepreneurship education system and the unique values and philosophies of entrepreneurship education. In specific, Chinese universities should develop the general entrepreneurship education with the focus on entrepreneurship spirit and entrepreneurship competence rather than aim at hastening the education on the establishment of well-known enterprises in the narrow sense. At the same time, the development of entrepreneurship education should integrate the core values of socialism, the philosophy of educating people in Chinese higher education, and the excellent traditional Chinese culture. In the process of the construction of the entrepreneurship education system, it is necessary to realize the integration of entrepreneurship education and specialized education, the integration of entrepreneurship education and position entrepreneurship, the integration of entrepreneurship education and the local economic development and that of entrepreneurship education and the construction of entrepreneurship universities.
Meanwhile, it is advised to consider the coordinationbetweenthe creation of entrepreneurship atmosphere in society and different departments in universities and all social circles as a whole in the construction of university entrepreneurship education system. It is suggested to set up independent departmentsin universities to distribute the work and resources of entrepreneurship education and establish the selection, training and promotion system of entrepreneurship education faculties and make it systematic, standardized and more efficient in nature. The formal communication mechanism between the government and universities should be set up for the business development of college students to solve problems appropriately in the transition from campus to society and implement national entrepreneurship policies for college students. Favorable cultural factors for the business development in the excellent traditional Chinese culture should be deeply explored and publicized constantly to give full play to their potential functions and actively create entrepreneurship atmosphere to cultivate the acknowledgement of the value of entrepreneurship and build up a sound cycle from the environment to the operation.
